Open Heart Surgery |
BRMC actively participates in both the Keystone ICU project and the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP). These programs focus on: improving patient care through timing and selection of appropriate antibiotics, improved patient preparation for the procedure, and monitoring and treating the patient post-operatively. This is accomplished through activities such as actively monitoring and managing blood glucose levels, and respiratory management for early extubation.
BRMC also participates in the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS) registry for open heart patients. The valuable information that this registry generates is shared with our Medical staff at both their department meetings and the Open Heart Workgroup. Performance Improvement activities are generated through these groups. |
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention |
Information from the ACC registry is shared with Cardiology at their department meeting, as well as the Cardiovascular Workgroup. BRMC developed a "Dr. Heart" procedure in 2005 to assist in the rapid identification of, and transportation to the cardiac catheterization lab for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Our goal is for the AMI patient to have balloon inflation within 90 minutes of arrival at the ED door. |
Carotid Endarterectomy Surgery |
BRMC has obtained certification from Medicare to perform carotid angioplasty for high risk patients. Physicians (Radiologists and Cardiologists) with advanced training may perform angioplasty in lieu of open carotid surgery for patients with high risk conditions. We are participating in a new data registry through the American College of Cardiology. |
Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis |
We use the VA National Center for Patient Safety Healthcare FMEA model. |

We have adopted the VA National Center for Patient Safety and JCAHO model for Root Cause Analysis. |
