2003 Michigan
Health and Safety Coalition (MH&SC) Joint Hospital Survey
The 2003 MH&SC
Joint Hospital Survey is underway. Hospital CEOs were sent information
on this year's survey during the last week of August. During September
hospitals throughout Michigan are being asked to complete the
on-line survey on the following areas of care:
- Open Heart
Surgery
- Coronary
Artery Bypass Surgery
- Percutaneous
Coronary Intervention
- Abdominal
Aortic Aneurysm Repair
- Carotid
Endarterectomy Surgery
- Pancreatic
Resection
- Esophagectomy

Infants and Infants with Congenital Anomalies in NICUs
- Intensive
Care Unit Physician Staffing
- Computerized
Physician Order Entry
This year's
survey is a joint effort between the Michigan Health and Safety
Coalition and The Leapfrog Group (LG). The LG is a national non-profit
organization representing purchasers.
The survey
evaluates hospital performance against guidelines for care and
helps identify opportunities to improve patient safety and the
quality of health care in Michigan and across the country.
Participation
in the survey is voluntary but hospitals have been overwhelmingly
supportive of the effort.
To be included
in this year's MH&SC reporting process, the completed survey
must be submitted by September 30, 2003. This year, survey results
for the consumer report will be scored using a five point bullet
scale, as follows:

reflect only the non-volume activities recommended in the MH&SC'
s guideline ("recommended activities results"). They
do not take into consideration procedure volume, which is shown
separately on the consumer report.
The results
of the survey are made available to the general public, and many
organizations refer to the survey as a part of their improvement
efforts. Most notably, this year's survey will allow:
- Hospitals
to measure their performance against the guidelines and the
performance of other hospitals in Michigan and in the United
States.
- Consumers
to view online individual hospital performance.
- The MH&SC
and the LG to identify where best to focus their efforts to
further their quality and safety goals
